Question analysis
1) What kind of artists would you like to see in this magazine and why?
Rihanna, Drake, Kendrick Lamar, Usher and Eminem because they are their favourite artists and are interested in them.
2) Who would you want to read a double page spread about?
People said they would like to read articles on artists such as Rihanna, Drake, Usher and Kendrick Lamar. This is because these are their favourite artists in the R&B genre.
3) What else would you feature/ want to read in a magazine?
People said that they would like to see competitions included and would also like things that come with the magazine for example testers of products or mp3's.
4) What colour house style would you want to see used in the magazine?
People said they would like to see bold colours because that catches their attention. They also said that bright colours would not attract them to a magazine because they think those colours are used for magazine that are for younger people.
5) Would you like a lot of pictures on the front cover?
Most people wanted a lot of pictures on the front because that is what catches their attention first, they also wanted pictures because they want to see who is going to be included inside the magazine; however, they do want some information on the front instead of having a page of images because they want to know that they will want to read the information inside.
6) How much are you willing to pay for the magazine and why?
The people who answered my questions said that they would pay between £0 and £3, they said this because it is only a magazine and did not want to spend too much money on it.
7) How old are you?
My results showed that most people who answered my questionnaire were between the ages of 16 and 19.
8) Are you male or female?
There were a mixture of responses for this question as R&B appeals to both genders as there are a variety of male and female artists in this genre.
9) Would you like the context to be technical?
My answers collected showed that most people did want the context to be technical because they wanted the information to be interesting instead of simple and boring.
10) What is your favourite RnB magazine?
People said that their favourite R&B magazines are Vibe and NME. They like these magazines because the information inside is interesting and they like the artists included.

My target audience for my music magazine is teenagers between the ages of 16 and 18 as I am within that age group and I will be able to relate to what they want to see in a music magazine and what the would pay for. The music genre that my magazine will be based on would appeal to older teens as the music is aimed at this age group and is not suitable to younger teens.

R&B
Black would be used for an RnB magazine because it symbolises power. Most artists in the R&B genre have a lot of power or like to think they do as R&B is a very popular genre of music to listen to. Black also shows that the magazine/ genre is not for younger people to listen to because it can be rude, childrens music magazines would use colours such as bright pink, blue, green and yellow.
Red is used in R&B magazines quite a lot and is associated with strength, power and energy. For the R&B industry artists need to be able to fight to show their music and o be the best artist in that genre. For example Eminem would be represented with red as he has got himself to the top and is known as the world best rapper.
Blue has been used on magazines for R&B as it shows confidence, depth and stability. For a Vibe magazine cover Rihanna was on the front with the colour blue as a background. This shows that she is well known and is stable where she is in the R&B industry, she is also a very confident artist and is not afaid to be different. This shows that artists need to be different and confident to be able to get as well known as Rihanna.
Yellow is associated with wealth, it is used in R&B magazines because most of the artists like to show off their wealth with the things they wear. It could appear on the front cover to highlight different features, for example a yellow heading against a black background would stand out and catch our attention. I will not be using the colour yellow on my front cover as I am not basing my magazine on wealth.

Double page spread analysis
For this double page spread there is a pale grey background which makes everything else on the page stand out. Behind the picture there is 'USA' in bold letters, these letters are in darker grey which makes it stand out but not as much as the writing saying 'got the love' in black letters. These words are made to stand out because it is a line in one of Florence and the machines song.
The writing in the bottom right corner is in a formal font which shows that her music is for older children/ teens and not younger children. The writing is in black which makes it easier and clearer to read against the lighter background. It is also in a small font which shows it wont be for young children because they will find it harder to read.
Vibe double page spread analysis 2For this double page spread the colours have been kept simple to make different parts of the pages stand out. The picture on the left page is stands out more than the right page because it has a darker background.
For the right page the background has been kept white to make the black writing clearer and easier for us to read. There are parts of the writing which are in bold to make it stand out to us that they are highlighting a sub-heading or certain bits of information that we will be interested in.
The colours used are also showing that the magazine is for teens and older. If it was meant for younger children there would be brighter colours, less writing and the writing would also be in a bigger font.
These two pages are mainly black, white and grey. By using these colours it has made the black and grey writing stand out against the white/grey background. The background colour also makes the picture across the top stand out as they are in dark grey and black.
The picture in the middle of the page is the first thing that our eyes get drawn to because she is the only part of the page that is fully in colour, the bright red dress is also the brightest colour on the page which helps make Solange Knowles stand out and show that the writing will be all about her. The writing across the bottom half of the page is in small writing which shows that it is not for younger children. The writing is not as clear as it could be as black writing would be clearer and easier for us to read.

Contents page analysis
For this contents page they have used a picture of 50 cent for the whole left hand side of the page. He is wearing dark colours to make him stand out against the white background and could also be to show his power over the music industry.
The writing is in black and uses different sizes for the different parts of writing on the page. The heading is in bold black writing and is bigger than the rest of the writing on the page. By doing this it makes it clear what is going to be shown on this page. Below the heading are the different things that are going to be shown inside the magazine.
There are numbers which are in red to make it clear to us what is going to be shown on the different pages. Next to these numbers in bold is what is going to be shown in the magazine. Underneath the bold writing is writing that isn't in bold, it gives us a little bit more information about what is going to be on these pages which draws us into reading it even more. It also intrigues the audience because even though it has more information than the bold writing, it still does not give away exactly what we are going to be reading about.
For this contents page Usher has been used for the right hand side of the page. Instead of using lots of different images for the magazine they have only used one picture, this shows that the magazine inside will not be cluttered and crowded, instead it will look more sophisticated to attract the right aged audience.
Dark colours have been used for the background which makes the magazine look more mysterious and powerful.
The writing on the left hand side is in white to make it clear for us to read and make it stand out against the dark background. The numbers for the pages next to the writing are in bold black writing which lets us see that there are numbers there, however it does not make them stand out clearly for us to read.
The writing underneath the subheadings are in white writing, although they are not bold it still lets us see clearly that there is writing there for us to read. These bits of writing show us in a little bit more detail what is going to be on these pages, but is not in too much detail to make us feel like we don't want to read it now.
For this contents page they have used a 'V' in the background which stands for what the magazine is called. It has been put in grey which makes it stand out from the background, however it does not stand out enough to take the attention away from the writing 'Contents' which has been put in bold and black, it has also been made to look bulky which makes it stand out even more.
The word 'Contents' has been split into three bits which gives the magazine and the writing more detail and makes it look more interesting.
Down the right hand side is the writing which shows us what is going to be on the different pages. There is not much writing here which makes the image stand out more. The writing as not been made to stand out too much against the background because the numbers are the only bit of writing in bold.
This contents has not got a lot on it which makes it look more interesting for us to look at. It also shows that it is not a magazine for young children because if it was there would be bright colours and lots of pictures to keep their attention focused on this magazine.

Magazine cover analysis
This magazine cover is focusing on advertising to girls, we can see this because the background is pink which is the colour that society portrays as a girl colour. By putting Katy Perry on the front also attracts girls because her music is aimed at girls/ teenagers.
They have used many things to attract girls to this magazine such as; the flowers on the dress, the colours used on the cover, Katy Perry on the front and the type of outfit she is wearing.
The colours used inside the letter of the heading makes it stand out as they are bright against the other colours on the page. The bold black text also makes the heading stand out against the light pink background.
The writing around the page is showing what will be inside the magazine and will pull the audience in further to read whats inside. The name Katy Perry has been made to stand out from the rest of the text around the page. The different colours of text are to make the page look more interesting and draw the reader to different parts of the page.
The way Katy Perry has been put onto the page causes part of the magazine heading to be blocked out. This makes the cover look more interesting for us to lo9ok at and makes us think why it has been done (again making us think and be drawn in).
Magazine cover analysis- KERRANG
Kerrang is the worlds biggest selling weekly rock magazine, we get that type of feeling from the cover as the colours used don't look friendly and wouldn't attract a younger audience who are interested in pop music.
By the heading there is an effect which looks like there had been glass infront of it that has been smashed, this could be to show that the music the magazine is about is loud and violent.
The picture in the middle of the page of Paramore would attract an audience who likes their music. This magazine cover also doesn't have much text around the page which could show that the inside isn't going to have a lot of stories in. However instead of text being around the page there are more photos of the band which could just show to the audience that the magazine is just going to be about Paramore.
The bold black letters used for the heading make it stand out from the page as it has a white background behind. The background also makes the image of Paramore stand out because they are dressed in dark colours which make themas a group look bold and serious as well.
Magazine cover analysis- VIBE
Vibe is a magazine about urban music, this is why there is a picture of T.I on the front in the middle.
The colours of the magazine give a more serious look, this will help attract people interested in this music because younger people would look for brighter colours depending on the genre they like. There is not too much red on the cover in bold which would show either more romantic music (lighter red and pink) or violent and heavy music which would be a darker red.
The rest of the image could be in black and white to make it go with the suit that T.I is wearing. By wearing a suit it makes the magazine look more formal and grown up.
The heading is in bold red letters which makes it stand out against the black and white background.
The writing around the edge of the page is is also attracting the target audience by describing what is going to be in the magazine. This has also been put in black and red to stand out against the white background.
Vibe Magazine cover analysis 2
This cover is showing Rihanna in the middle of the page, this will immediately attract people who are interested in her or her music to the magazine. As we read the writing around the edge we also find out that there is information included about her relationship with Chris Brown. Including Chris Brown on the cover will also attract his fans to the magazine.
The heading has been put in white to make it stand out as the picture of Rihanna is in black and white with a blue background as well.
There isn't a lot of writing around the page which could be to show that the picture is showing what the magazine is mainly about.

The colours used are showing that the magazine is not suitable for younger people, if the magazine was trying to attract a young audience they would have used bright colours to show that it a friendly magazine.
The title has been put in red and black fading out of each other to make it stand out from the page but not to take the attention away from Eminem. the writing around the page is in red and black to make it clear and easy to read. His name has been put in bold red letters to make it clear whos music is being advertised. This could also be for people who have heard of Eminem as an artist but do not know what he looks like.
He is wearing a black vest which makes him stick out against the background because if they put him in a grey top he would not stand out as much. The grey background might show that he/ his music is not pure, we know this because white symbolises purity.

Introduction
I have completed my preliminary task and i am now doing my final project and main task which is my music magazine. This task will include magazine analysis, a questionnaire, font testing and colour testing.
